It’s going to be a good summer. South swell energy’s already bombarding the California coast, and announced today, Jack Johnson has a new album coming out, aptly titled “Surfilmusic.”

The new album accompanies the release of Jack’s new documentary, also titled “Surfilmmusic,” which details his evolution from surfer to cinematographer to multi-platinum selling recording artist. Screened for the first time at SXSW this week, the project has been a collaborative effort between Jack and Chris and Emmett Malloy, as well as a whole lot of other talented people behind the scenes.

The new music drops May 15 via Brushfire Records and will be a double album, featuring the original score to the new film, as well as some rare 4-track recordings from Jack’s formative years. And a little backstory to those recordings, they were largely done on a 4-track machine that Jack’s buddy Kelly Slater left at his house after a season on the North Shore … but more on that later.

Priming the pump, Jack and Hermanos Gutiērrez released the first cut from the soundtrack, a soulful, surf-inspired rendition of “Drink The Water.”

After debuting the film at SXSW, Jack and the band are headed to Stubb’s in Austin for a special show. They’ll be screening Jack’s classic film “Thicker Than Water,” then Hermanos Gutiérrez take the stage for a set, before Jack and friends do their thing.

The new album, new film, and tour to support it all kicks off in earnest with two special screenings in Hawai‘i on May 14 and May 15 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Tickets for these premiere screenings go on sale the week of March 16, with registrations now open for a Hawaiʻi resident-only presale.

Not to give too much away, but to celebrate 25 years of music and magic, the team here at SURFER have been working closely with Jack and the Malloys on a very special print issue of the magazine that will drop this May … just in time for the new album and new film. And just in time for summer. Stay tuned, more to come on all fronts.
