Jack Supports the Hokule’a World Wide Voyage
“You hear these stories of the Hokule‘a, and growing up in Hawaii it’s your idea of what courage is.” Jack Johnson
As the the crew of the Hōkūleʻa Worldwide Voyage prepares to leave on a 3 year journey across the Earth’s oceans on double-hulled sailing canoes, Jack joined Chucky Boy Chock and Paula Fuga last weekend to unveil a new song collaboration inspired by the journey, "Na Ho‘okele Opiopio," or "The Young Navigators." Jack was proud to lend support to this legendary effort, "To me, the idea of Hōkūle‘a and doing these journeys, being able to survive on your own with very limited tools ... it's also about sustainability."
Thousands of years ago, Polynesians explored and settled the vast Pacific Ocean covering more than 10 million square miles. Carrying in open canoes all the provisions needed for the voyage and a new life, these courageous seafarers used the stars, wave patterns, and sea birds to help them chart their course and find new island homes never before known to humans. Hawaiʻi’s Polynesian Voyaging Society is perpetuating the ancient art of non-instrument ocean navigation while using technology to bring the world along with them on their quest to circumnavigate the globe. The Hawaiian name for this voyage, Mālama Honua, means “to care for our Earth.”
Living on an island chain teaches us that our natural world is a gift with limits and that we must carefully conserve our resources. The Worldwide Voyage is also a means by which young leaders will engage all of Island Earth—practicing how to live sustainably, while sharing, learning, and creating global relationships. Jack will continue his involvement and support of the crew through his music and by helping spread the word about how we can all work together to protect these traditions, the oceans, and Island Earth.
